Knoxville, TN Gum Disease Treatment
Gum disease refers to a variety of conditions that affect the foundation of your teeth - the gums, bone, and supporting structures. These conditions can range from mild gingivitis to more severe periodontitis, which can result in loose and fragile teeth.
Identifying Gum Disease
Dr. Kyle Smith and our team at Beaver Creek Dental believe that preventative dental care is the best way to help you keep all of your teeth healthy for the long term. During our exams, we aren’t just looking at your teeth - we’re also evaluating the health of your gums and tissues below the surface. We use high-quality digital x-rays and gum measurements to help us evaluate your teeth for potential gum disease.
Gingivitis simply refers to inflammation of the gingiva, or gums, of the mouth. The most common cause of gingivitis is dental plaque, which is a soft bacterial biofilm that attaches to your teeth. Dental plaque starts to form only seconds after you brush, making it very important to not only have great oral hygiene habits but also to have great dietary habits.
Fortunately, treating gingivitis is usually quite easy! All we need to do is remove the bacterial biofilm. With great oral hygiene habits and regular dental cleanings, surface bacteria on your teeth don’t stand a chance.
Periodontitis is the term we use to describe inflammation and disease of the foundation of your teeth. This is usually seen when superficial dental plaque (bacteria) begins to creep beneath the gums, wreaking havoc on the supporting structures. Often a painless condition, the progression of periodontitis eventually results in gum recession, bone loss, and loose teeth.
Can’t I Have “Just a Cleaning?”
Regular dental cleanings are actually meant to be preventative - meaning we do them to protect your teeth. Scaling and root planing is a type of therapy that focuses on treating active severe gum disease by removing the bacteria and debris beneath your gums.
Sometimes, “just a cleaning” isn’t enough and could actually do more harm. Studies have shown that severe gum disease can be hard on your heart and your overall systemic health, emphasizing the need for regular dental cleanings and exams.
